Natural and fibre cement slate, fitted and repaired by our in-house team, with the slate named on every project.
Slate roofing means covering a pitched roof in slate, either natural or fibre cement. We are based in Poole, and our in-house team has fitted Spanish slate, Cembrit Jutland fibre cement slates and Cedral Thrutone slates on the projects shown below. Every job starts with a free site survey and a written breakdown of options.
Six of our projects are slate jobs, and each names the slate used. Find them in the Slate Projects list below.
If you are weighing up a whole new roof, see our roof replacement page.
Natural slate: at Moonfleet Manor Hotel in Weymouth we fitted new Esco traditional Spanish slates on a mansard roof above the hotel restaurant, which stayed open while we worked.
Fibre cement slates: at Avon Road West in Christchurch and Christchurch Road in Southbourne we fitted Cembrit Jutland fibre cement slates (blue/black). At Struan Gardens in Ashley Heath we fitted Etex Cedral Thrutone smooth slates (blue/black), and at Putney we fitted Cedral Thrutone slates at 600x300mm.
The roof at Putney had synthetic slates that were cracking, and the damage had spread to the batten and membrane below. We stripped the front and rear elevations back to the joists before fitting the new slate.
At West Cliff Studios in Bournemouth the valleys were split and cracked, letting water under the waterproofing. We stripped away the surrounding slates, replaced the valleys with new GRP slate valley troughs once our carpenters had rectified the timber under the old valleys. For the wider picture, see our roof repairs in Bournemouth page.
Every job backed by our 10-year IBG and 20-year standard guarantee
The old covering, batten and membrane come off to reveal the structure. At Struan Gardens we also completed carpentry on the roof structure before building the new roof up.
A breather membrane goes over the roof, such as Roofshield at Avon Road West and Proctor Roofshield at Christchurch Road, or an eco-standard membrane at Struan Gardens.
Treated roofing batten is fixed at the gauge the slate system needs, then the slates are fitted course by course.
The ridge and hips are finished next. At Struan Gardens and Christchurch Road we fitted Marley Modern dry fix ridge and hip tiles, and lead flashings finish the details around dormers.
Six slate roofs from our recent projects, each with the slate named.

Sam & Lee were very helpful from the initial consultation, backing this up with a very detailed step by step proposal. The work was carried out on time and very efficiently. The site was left tidy every day and we were kept up to date with the progress at the end of each day. Highly recommend to anybody looking for a local roofing expert with very competitive pricing. Very friendly team.”

Lead problems don't always show themselves until there's already water getting in — we'll check it properly before recommending anything.

Esco traditional Spanish slates at Moonfleet Manor Hotel, Cembrit Jutland fibre cement slates at Avon Road West and Christchurch Road, and Cedral Thrutone slates at Struan Gardens and Putney.
Natural slate is a natural material, such as the Spanish slate we fitted at Moonfleet Manor. Fibre cement slates, such as Cembrit Jutland, are man-made. We can talk through which suits your roof at survey.
Yes. At Putney we dealt with cracking slates and water damage, and at West Cliff Studios we replaced split valleys with GRP slate valley troughs. Every repair starts with a survey.
Yes, we did this at Struan Gardens in Ashley Heath, where the old tiles came off and Cedral Thrutone slates went on. Your roof structure decides whether slate is right, so we look at that during the survey.
